The Best Materials To Use for Your Metal Fabrication Project

The Best Materials To Use for Your Metal Fabrication Project

In metal fabrication, metals are cut, bent, and assembled to create products and structures. Metal fabricators produce a wide array of objects, including tools, hardware, and items used in bridges and buildings.

Whatever the final product, it starts out as raw material. Use the following information to understand the best materials to use for your metal fabrication project.

Steel

Steel, an alloy of iron and carbon, is the most popular material in metal fabrication. It’s used as a construction material for machinery, weapons, fixtures, panels, and more.

When you’re deciding on your materials, one key consideration is the function of the finished product. Think about the purpose of your product, including whether it will be subjected to the elements or have to bear weight. Steel is popular because it’s strong, durable, and easy to work with. All of these factors make it a great option that also reduces operation costs of metal fabricators.

Aluminum

Aluminum is another popular material in metal fabrication. That’s because it’s strong yet lightweight, making it a durable material to work with and install. It’s highly corrosion resistant, which makes it ideal for outdoor applications and even for use on ships.

Aluminum isn’t suited for environments over 400 degrees Fahrenheit, but it works well in subzero temperatures. And it’s relatively affordable when compared to other metals.

Copper

If you want your product to have an attractive finish, copper can be a great choice. It’s easy to work with, and it can be polished to a beautiful sheen. Some homeowners choose to use copper throughout their homes, such as for stylish sinks, because it’s beautiful and has antimicrobial properties.

Copper is also an excellent conductor of heat and electricity, making it one of the best materials to use for metal fabrication projects. Because of this, it’s mostly used in electrical equipment. To make wires, copper is first heated to become flexible. Then, it’s pulled to form strands and stretched to produce wires of the desired thickness.

Stainless Steel

Stainless steel is another great option for metal fabrication. It’s extremely durable, and it resists rust and corrosion. Its high melting point makes it ideal for high-heat applications, and it can also withstand extremely cold temperatures.

Stainless steel’s resistance to bacterial growth has made it a mainstay in commercial and home kitchens. This characteristic also makes it great for medical settings.
