What is a tithe?

A tithe is a monetary donation a member of a religious organization gives to their religious institution. In most cases, a tithe is equivalent to 10% of your salary.

Offerings and other monetary donations are also gifts to a religious organization but are separate from a tithe. Most religions see this as “extra” or going beyond a tithe.

Are tithes tax deductible?

Yes, since most religious institutions are non-profits your tithe is tax-deductible. If your tithe in one year is more than $250 you will need a receipt of donation from your church to claim it properly.

Where does your tithe go?

In most cases, tithes cover the operational costs of a church. This means paying the utility bills, building maintenance, and even payroll. Tithes will also fund mission trips, church activities, and other ministries. Some churches will donate a portion of their tithe income to another ministry or cause.
