Video Conferencing

This is a no brainer. You have probably spent at least a few hours on Zoom, Google Hangouts, or maybe even WebEx (eeeww).

While millions try to stay in touch with co-workers and family these services have been exploding. Zoom, for instance, has seen unprecedented revenue growth in the first quarter of 2020. Recent estimates are for fiscal first-quarter revenue to be between $199 million and $201 million – putting them somewhere around at 60% year over year growth.

Obviously there is some uncertainty if growth can continue at this rate after the Coronavirus pandemic blows over (if it ever does), but the future is bright. If nothing else this niche got a sweet load of cash the pump back into their tech and marketing budget.

Growth may slow, but these guys are just getting started.

Meal & Grocery Delivery

With a total of 43 U.S states implementing stay at home orders more and more are relying on delivery services for their meals and basic home items. Its no surprise delivery services both large and small are being overwhelmed with orders.

Several of the big players are going all in on the circumstances. For example GrubHub is now pushing their tugging at their users hearts with a marketing campaign around saving your favorite restaurants.

Depending on how you look it this may be great marketing or capitalizing on others misfortune. This article on TechCrunch seems to think so at least.

Grocery Stores

Even though the toilet paper isle is empty grocery store chains are killing it right now. Keyword – right now.

Since they are the light in a dark tunnel of closed businesses, customers are flocking into to stock up on everything. Well mostly toilet paper.

Either way, sales in the first quarter for many grocery chains is up 30-60%. But analysts say this will be a short-lived phenomenon. By the end of the year, it’s expected that the fiscal bump from the pandemic will only be an 8-15% bump on the bottom line.

Liquor Stores

What happens when you stop Americans from going to their favorite bars and restaurants and lock them up in their homes. Apparently they drink their faces off.

Rock on party people.

The week of March 21st saw a 55% jump in U.S alcohol sales and a 75% increase compared to the same period last year. This has been boosted with two other items on this list. Delivery services like Drizly (your welcome) and online drinking parties hosted on video conferencing software.

We should note the World Health Organization has said that alcohol is an “unhelpful coping strategy” for those in lock-down. I bet they’re fun at parties.

Board Games

Guess what else sees a bump from people sitting around the house drinking all day – board games.

Games like Pandemic (you think they knew this was coming?) and Settlers of Catan have been flying off shelves. But, that’s not necessarily new. With all the hipsters bringing back vinyl and vintage books, board games have been working their way back to the coffee table.

As part of this bundle, the Business is also committing the following:

A $200 million investment fund which can help NGOs and financial institutions provide small companies with funding

$250 million in advertisements grants to assist the World Health Organization and government agencies provide advice about the best way best to avoid the spread of COVID-19

$20 million in Google Cloud credits for academic institutions and investigators

Unspecified fiscal aid to help improve production capability for lifesaving equipment, such as facial masks and ventilators.

Wind power might have enjoyed a solid year in 2019, however, the coronavirus outbreak is casting a shadow across the industry that may impact the increase in the years ahead. Solar panels also had a great year in 2019 because of their many consumer benefits in this article from Zophra.com.

Released Wednesday, the GWEC’s report discovered that 60.4 GW of power has been set up in 2019, the 2nd most significant year for developments. The complete capacity currently stands at over 651 GW.

From the onshore industry, China and the U.S. continued to be the world’s top markets, accountable for over 60 percent of new capacity this past year. The offshore wind industry installed 6.1 GW of power in 2019, it’s very best season thus far.

While the amounts for 2019 really are a positive for the industry, the Coronavirus pandemic might have a substantial influence on things ahead.

On Tuesday, Dan Shreve, Wood Mackenzie’s head of global wind energy research, wrote the coronavirus would observe international breeze additions for 2020 fall by 4.9 GW in comparison with previous projections.

“The condition of this pandemic is growing on a hourly basis, leading to an extremely reactionary environment,” Shreve said.

“Industry stakeholders are always adapting business operations to equilibrium employee security with the requirements of their customers, while complying with lively government containment steps,” he added.

For its own part, the GWEC stated its forecast of continued expansion across the following five years — over 355 GW of developments — would”definitely be affected by the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, because of disruptions to international supply chains and job implementation in 2020.”

It was, nevertheless,”too soon to forecast that the extent” of this coronavirus’ influence on both electricity markets and the broader international market, the GWEC added.

United Airlines on Friday cautioned that it expects a protracted slump in travel requirement due to the coronavirus, which will probably require the company to have a bigger work force, whilst Delta asked for volunteers to take unpaid leave after near a quarter of their carrier’s workers raised their hands.

The message has been the hottest in a succession from executives who don’t anticipate a fast U.S., or worldwide, retrieval in the coronavirus pandemic. The USA has discovered over 97,000 instances of COVID-19.

Layoffs or furloughs in United, which had roughly 96,000 workers at the end of this past year, are not imminent. The coronavirus help bill provides $25 billion in grants to U.S. passenger drivers, given they don’t furlough or reduce the pay of the employees through Sept. 30. United executives dedicated to this on Friday.

United is trying to reduce its prices by asking workers to take unpaid leave, though some employees is working a reduced program. Airlines such as United, are trying to exhaust voluntary leaves, such as early retirement programs, before turning into furloughs or layoffs.

Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian on Friday also said the firm would not cut cover or furlough employees through this period and said that the government help would not fix the downturn in demand.

“While this support is welcome, it is important to keep in mind that the aid package isn’t a cure for its unprecedented challenges we confront,” Bastian told workers in a memo. Some 21,000 employees have volunteered for unpaid leave in different phases.

The cost from the virus along with draconian measures like stay-at-home orders and efforts to prevent COVID-19 from spreading is already reverberating through the U.S. market. Unemployment claims jumped into a list of 3.28 million from the week ended March 21.

U.S. airlines, that use some 750,000 individuals, have been one of the companies hardest hit from the coronavirus. Strict travel limitations and worries about contracting the disease while traveling have pushed down demand. A delicate market will also mean fewer profitable business trips and holidays for customers.

Their global operations are cut into the smallest in years.

Executives have cautioned that their decreased programs are drawing couple travelers. Chicago-based United has cut its own April program by over 60 percent and anticipates planes to fly less than 20% complete or at the single digits sometimes, the executives said.

Kirby and Munoz commended their workers along with also a”deep-seated tradition of caring for one another.”

“When traveling demand yields — and it will return — we’ll bounce back and plan to accelerate towards our aim of getting the best airline in the history of aviation,” they stated.

Instacart employees intend to attack on Monday before the grocery delivery provider meets their requirements for provisions such as danger pay and security gear.

The employees are requesting Instacart for an extra $5 per purchase plus a default option tip of a minimum of 10 percent per arrangement, they stated in an announcement , together with the Gig Workers Collective.

“For the last several weeks, Instacart Shoppers and Gig Workers Collective have been advocating Instacart to take appropriate security measures,” the announcement said. “We’ve been discounted.”

The team is also requesting Instacart for security provisions such as hand sanitizer, disinfectant wipes, and soap, in addition to enlarged paid leave for those who have preexisting conditions or people that are needed to self-quarantine. They are looking for an expansion of their paid leave past April 8, even when they said it’s set to expire.

“Instacart has turned into this pandemic to a PR effort, depicting itself that the hero of households who are sheltered-in-place, isolated, or quarantined,” the team stated. “Instacart hasn’t provided crucial protections to growers around the front lines which could keep them from getting carriers, falling sick themselvesor worse.”

Instacart says it might expand paid leave to May 8 and might contain individuals put in compulsory quarantine by public health authorities from the policy. Impacted Shoppers will get around 14 days of paid time off.

Shoppers may also expect wider access to hand sanitizer and other equipment in the forthcoming weeks.

“Our purpose is to supply a secure and elastic earnings chance to Shoppers, while also proactively choosing the proper precautionary steps to function ,” Instacart informed Business Insider. “we would like to highlight that people surely respect the rights of growers to provide us comments and voice their own concerns. It is a valuable way for us to always make improvements to the Shopper encounter and we are dedicated to supporting this community in this crucial moment.”

The attack comes as Instacart attempts to employ 300,000 additional employees to send markets to individuals throughout the coronavirus outbreak.

While Shoppers may acquire individualized cover increases, based on factors such as customer or region requirement, it is uncertain if Instacart will satisfy with the attack’s specific demand of danger pay. That would likely vary from Shoppers getting a bonus depending on the amount of batches that they finish on a particular shift.

In that moment, Instacart has”never as much as fulfilled with us after,” Bain said.

Bain advised Vice’s Motherboard, which reported that the attack , that although Instacart’s corporate workers have”health insurance, life insurance, and paid time off… [gig employees ] are given none of those protections.”

“We deserve and need better.”

Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway is able to purchase almost some one of America’s public firms after coronavirus fears decimated their market capitalizations lately.

The famed investor conglomerate boasted $125 billion in cash, cash equivalents, and short-term investments in US Treasuries at the end of December. Assuming that amount has not altered, and looking only at market caps — dismissing if or not a purchase could be viable, sensible, as well as lawful — Berkshire could purchase one of over 450 businesses from the S&P 500, over 80 from the Nasdaq 100, and 11 from the Dow 30 without having financing, as of the close of trading on March 27.

By way of instance, Berkshire could manage McDonald’s ($125 billion) or PayPal ($118 billion) from the S&P 500. On the Dow, it might wind up Boeing ($102 billion), IBM ($100 billion), or Goldman Sachs ($57 billion) without blowing its own budget. From the Nasdaq 100, neither Tesla ($97 billion) nor Starbucks ($82 billion) would break the bank.

Buffett prizes fiscal security, and Berkshire Hathaway has pledged never to exhaust Berkshire’s cash stack.

“We believe a part of the stash to be untouchable, with vowed to at all times maintain at least $20 billion in cash equivalents to shield against outside calamities,” he stated at his 2018 correspondence to investors .

Additionally, shareholders of a business on the auction block normally demand a premium to its current market cap to signify its future earnings potential.

Assuming Berkshire would not invest more than $105 billion in total, and had to cover a 20% premium, it might still manage the industrials titan 3M ($78 billion), T-Mobile US ($73 billion), United Parcel Service ($86 billion), or General Electric ($71 billion). It may even purchase Target ($48 billion) and also have sufficient money left over to purchase General Motors ($32 billion).

As a careful investor, Buffett would definitely snub a number of these companies. On the other hand, the raft of potential acquisitions in their own price range highlights both the scale of their current sell-off and the abundant potential of Berkshire’s enormous money stack.

Buffett is about the search for an”elephant-sized acquisition,” and also his selection of elephants has increased appreciably.
